Invigorate Your Church Choir (And You!)

It is all too easy, whether we have been in a particular position for two years or twenty, to focus only on preparing that Sunday’s anthem, remaining content with the preexisting skills and knowledge our volunteer choristers bring to us. But if we do, our choir will never grow, and we will grow stale and perhaps burn out.

Whether you’ve never learned how to build your choir’s musicianship and vocal technique in a systematic manner, or could use a refresher, you will leave with a variety of pedagogical tips, tricks, ideas, and perspectives to enliven your rehearsals and, thus, your worship.

Clinican: Frank Martignetti

"Classics" from the Crypt

A Gothic sanctuary will set the scene for a unique concert this month. The Jazz at the Crypt concert series will present “Classics” from the Crypt at the Church of the Intercession (155th and Broadway) on Wednesday, August 20 at 7:30 PM.

Not sure if you can listen to an all-jazz or an all-classical program? No worries with this particular group of musicians! The artists hail from Harlem and Washington Heights, and it is not uncommon to find them gathered in one of their Sugar Hill apartments for good food, conversation, and an inevitable jam session. While they have diverse musical backgrounds, they all agree that a good song is a good song- regardless of its origin or what genre it is labeled.

Soprano Hillarie O’Toole organized the program with one goal in mind: to present a variety of “classic” music that is tear-jerking, foot-tapping, and soulful, regardless of how it is “classified”. The program will feature singers Tom and Hillarie O’Toole, Christian Figueroa, pianists Douglas Martin and Frank Martignetti, and the acclaimed world-jazz trio La Voz de Tres with trumpeter Thomas Bergeron performing a mixture of classical art song, Latin Jazz, and standards from the Great American Songbook.

The Crypt at The Church of the Intercession has served as the venue for many film, television, and photo shoots, such as 666 Park Avenue, Law and Order, Law and Order SVU, and was recently Listed by CBS New York as one of “5 Unusual NYC Spots To Hear Jazz Music”. Amazing space. Astounding acoustics. “Classic” music.

Prior to the concert, enjoy discounted food and drinks at the fabulousTaszo Espresso Bar from 6-7:30PM. The music, food and drinks will continue there after the concert from 9PM-close. Enjoy an evening uptown!

Artists:
Hillarie O'Toole, soprano
Tom O'Toole, baritone
Christian Figueroa, tenor
Frank Martignetti, piano
Douglas Jay Martin, piano
La Voz De Tres featuring Thomas Bergeron

Tickets $20. 50% of the proceeds will support the Music Ministry of the Church of the Intercession.
