Biography

Frank Martignetti joined the faculty of the Farrington College of Education and Human Development at Sacred Heart University (Fairfield, CT) in August, 2021, as Program Director and Assistant Professor of Music Education. At SHU, he is the inaugural director of the M.A.T. music certification program, and a five-year B.A.-M.A.T. music education program. He also serves as Director of Music & Organist at First Church, Congregational, Fairfield, CT. Previously, he served as Chair, Department of Music & Performing Arts at the University of Bridgeport, also leading choral activities, and additionally as a church musician in Manhattan, Connecticut, and Ohio. A K-12 teacher for ten years, almost entirely in urban schools, he received the New Haven Symphony’s 2006 Excellence in Music Teaching Award. As a conductor, Dr. Martignetti has prepared singers for performances at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, both at UB and as the Artistic Director of the Mystic River Chorale from 2008 to 2021. He was a finalist for the 2015 American Prize in Choral Conducting for his work with the Chorale. Guest conducting appearances include Carnegie Hall (2025), the Mystic River Chorale (2024), Fairfield Center Stage (2023), the Sacred Heart University Orchestra (2022), the CMEA Southern Region HS Festival (2022), New Haven Oratorio Choir (2021), Hamden Symphony Orchestra (2013), New York University choirs (2013) and University Glee Club of New Haven (2005). Dr. Martignetti holds degrees from the University of Rochester (BA), the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (MM), New York University (PhD), and the Eastman School of Music (BM). His current research involves urban music education, urban education, sociological approaches to music education, and innovation in the collegiate music curriculum. In addition to presentations at a variety of colleges and conferences, his writing has been published by Oxford University Press, Information Age Publishing, in the Choral Journal, the Music Educators Journal, Visions of Research in Music Education, and the Journal of Popular Music Education . He has presented clinics, lectures, posters, and papers for the American Choral Directors Association, Bridgeport Boys Choir, the Bridgeport Public Schools, the College Music Society, Connecticut Music Educators Association (keynote speaker), the International Symposium on the Sociology of Music Education, Michigan State University, Middletown (CT) Public Schools, Montclair State University, New Haven Public Schools, New York University, Rhode Island Music Educators Association, Society for Music Teacher Education, Southern Connecticut State University, Union Theological Seminary of Columbia University, the University of Connecticut, and the University of North Texas. Dr. Martignetti currently serves as a pre-concert lecturer and member of the Board of Trustees of the Greater Bridgeport Symphony, as the Treasurer of the Connecticut chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, and is current Treasurer and Past Dean (2017-2021), Greater Bridgeport Chapter, American Guild of Organists.
